~ Biography of~ : Your Friendly Neighborhood Groove/Rock Project

BeatnikBrown started playing together in 2003, and the band's first regular gig (which drummer Jeremy had held for years) was playing out on the streets in Old City for First Fridays to support the Well-Fed Artist gallery on 3rd street.

   These early days consisted of trying to play the best music when the Real World cameras rolled by, and spending the rest of the night playing with anyone and everyone who wanted to sit in. This is where BnB began to do what makes us unique in Philly, which is encouraging sit-in musicians to walk up and jam with us. We have performed live with countless Philadelphia musicians, many of whom we had never met before they plugged in their instruments and jammed with us live. We continue this practice to this day - our 100th show featured several guests throughout the five-hour night. We are an original band that best fits into the category of "groove rock," but we are often called a jam band because we play a lot of improvisational music with roots in funk and a touch of a jazzy feel.

   From our summers on the streets, we started playing gigs in Old City, then South Street, then Jersey and the Philly 'burbs.

   BeatnikBrown has garnered local respect and continued to grow over the past five years for two main reasons:

      1) we offer a different show every time we play
      2) we'll get people dancing and having fun

   We have played regularly at LOVE Park, Main Street Phoenixville, Crazy Carl's, Doc Magrogan's, The Five Spot, The Fire, The Rusty Nail, and The Clubhouse at Summit Park, and we have also performed at The Khyber, Club 218, Big Heads, Fergie's Pub, The Chestnut Room at Brownie's 38, and countless other fun venues.

   The band took some time off in the fall of 2008 to replace its original bassist, Jeff, who still sits in with us when he is able. BeatnikBrown is moving forward this winter with Tom on bass, and making some great strides since adding his harder-edge funk into the mix.

   The band's first studio EP, Five of Us Here for the Jam, is available on iTunes, CD Baby, and MySpace.

The band has invested in a full audio set up and has over five hours of original music and well-known covers, so BeatnikBrown is at its best when playing at venues where we can play for the entire night
